The International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos and the Hippocratic Altis
Perched on a hill overlooking the town of Kos, International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos (ΔΙΙΚ) is dedicated to the legacy of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. Established in 1960 by Spyridon Economou, Professor of Urology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Foundation aims to promote humanistic medicine grounded in Hippocratic values. The Foundation’s purpose includes fostering global exchanges on Hippocratic ideology, promoting ethical medical practices, and advancing Neo-Hippocratism.
The Hippocratic Clinic
A notable feature of the Foundation is the Hippocratic Clinic, housed within the premises. This exhibit, inaugurated in March 2014, meticulously recreates an ancient Greek medical practice as described in historical texts. Funded by the Lions Clubs and designed at a cost of €13,000, the clinic showcases period-specific medical tools and furniture crafted by local artisans from Kos.
Dr. Charalambos Kiarris, a dedicated scholar and physician, was instrumental in the creation of the clinic. His extensive research into ancient medical practices led to the development of an authentic representation of Hippocrates’ medical environment. The clinic includes replicas of historical instruments like the “Συνειλιγμένον Σκληρόν” (sub-mochlion), “Ύπερον” (stool), and “Άμβη” (support and splint), among others. These items are complemented by furniture such as the “Ανάκλιντρο” (couch) and “Τράπεζα” (table), providing visitors with a comprehensive view of ancient medical practices.
The Hippocratic Altis
Adjacent to the clinic, the Foundation grounds feature the Hippocratic Altis, a beautiful garden dedicated to celebrating Hippocrates. This area, designed by sculptor Nikos Ikaris in 1988, is marked by a striking statue of Hippocrates holding a snake in each hand. The Altis is set on a small hillock, offering breathtaking views of Kos and beyond. The path leading to the Altis is bordered by cypress trees, planted in 2008 by donors, each commemorated with an inscription.
The Altis symbolizes the sacred grove where Hippocrates is said to have taught, mirroring the ancient concept of an “αἰγιαλός” or sacred space. It serves as a tribute to Hippocrates’ enduring legacy and the principles of ancient Greek medicine.
Facilities and Events
The International Hippocratic Foundation also boasts the Hippocratic Museum, conference rooms, and various other facilities. Each area is designed to reflect Hippocratic themes, with numerous statues, artifacts, and educational displays.
