The church was constructed in the mid-19th century, around 1854, as the residents of Kardamaina transitioned from the old castle to settle in the valley surrounded by ancient cypress trees. This period marked a significant shift for the community, who sought to establish a place of worship to cater to their spiritual needs. At that time, Kardamaina had about 39 families, and despite their efforts to increase this number to 40, the population fluctuated, with new families arriving as others departed.
The church also served as a central hub for the community, hosting a school where children from Kardamaina and nearby Antimachia were educated. Notable figures such as Father Nikolaos and Father Giannis taught there. Additionally, a monk named Agapios from Smyrna resided in the area, offering financial help to the poor under the condition of repayment, which further emphasized the church’s role in community support. Nearby, there were also gravesites due to the lack of a formal cemetery and living quarters for the clergy.

The church is a single-nave structure with a distinct westward extension housing a women’s gallery. Its architectural elements include:
