
Platania is a small village located a mere 2 to 3 kms West of Kos Town, on the road that leads to the Asclepieion and the Hippocratic International Foundation. Its name derives from the big plane tree (platani) in the central square of the village. It is a very picturesque «old-fashioned» village with a few hundred residents, all of them of Turkish origin. During the Ottoman period, the village was called Kermetes, named after its Muslim inhabitants who settled there from Keramos in Asia Minor.
The main attractions of Platani are the traditional taverns with their delicious dishes, based on recipes coming from Asia Minor. It is a place you should definitely visit, as the culinary delights really stand out, there’s nothing like it on the whole island, but just make sure you have worked up an appetite… and don’t forget to try some of the sweets…
